What: The China ISO 9001 certificate is a document that indicates approval of the Chinese company’s quality management system.

Why: A valid ISO 9001 certificate indicates that the company can provide products and services in a consistent manner that meet or exceed both customer and regulatory requirements.

As we’ve discussed in numerous other articles, doing business in China requires a myriad of documents, certificates, processes, and procedures to ensure the relationship is legal, valid, and sustainable over time. One of the most common documents you’ll encounter as you begin to establish a relationship with a Chinese company is the China ISO 9001 certificate, a document that indicates approval of the Chinese company’s quality management system. Because a number of certification bodies issue the China ISO certificate, it’s important to understand the components of this important document to ensure that it is authentic, relevant, and legitimately issued by an official agency or entity.

The ISO 9001 is a global standard that indicates a company has met specific requirements for its quality management system. A valid ISO 9001 certificate indicates that the company can provide products and services in a consistent manner that meet or exceed both customer and regulatory requirements.

China ISO 9001 Certificate: Decoded

Frequently provided both in Chinese and English, the China ISO 9001 certificate should contain the following information about the business and its certification status, including:

  • Certificate number

  • Company name

  • Company addresses that the certification covers

  • Standard number (ISO 9001) year of revision (usually 2008 or 2015)

  • Certification scope

  • Date of issue and date of expiration Issue

In addition, the Chinese ISO 9001 certificate also should include information about the issuing agency or entity, including the name of the certifying agency, its logo, and any accreditation numbers and logos.

Issuing entities

There are a number of authorized entities who are able to issue China ISO 9001 certificates. In China, the China National Accreditation Service (CNAS) accredits these authorized entities. An additional point to consider about the issuing entities is to determine if an international body has provided additional accreditation to the issuing entity.

Usage

While the China ISO 9001 certificate applies generally to most industries, you’ll most likely encounter them in manufacturing and other heavy industrial sectors. This is especially true if they export their goods (and sometimes services) to countries outside China such as Europe, North and South America, and Australia. Often you’ll find that most companies outside China doing business in China require a China ISO 9001 certificate as a “cost of entry” document that must be in place before establishing a relationship with a Chinese company.

Verification

As with many Chinese documents, it’s important to conduct due diligence to ensure the China ISO 9001 certificate is not a forgery. Nuna Network provides verification services that can help you determine the authenticity of this and many other documents that are a part of establishing a business relationship with a Chinese company.
